About Harris

The Isle of Harris is not, in fact, an island at all. It is divided from the Isle of Lewis by the long sea inlets of Loch Seaforth and Loch Resort. Harris is definitely the most scenic of the Outer Hebrides with so much natural beauty in just 90 square miles.

The mountainous north of Harris includes the Clisham, a Corbett, and at 2622 feet, the highest peak in the Outer Hebrides. This area has challenging walks and climbing opportunities.

South of Tarbert are the magnificent sandy beaches and machairs on the west coast and the spectacular rough and rocky coastline on the east side. The pristine beaches are stunning and even at the height of summer more than six people on a beach are a crowd. Watch the sun set in a big western sky from Luskentyre beach - unforgettable!

beachThe 2 main settlements and ferry ports are Tarbert in the north and Leverburgh in the south with smaller villages strung along the coastline. Fishing and fish farming are major sources of employment, often combined with crofting. Roads, south of Tarbert are mostly narrow, single track and very twisting. Please drive carefully. Quiet roads make for good cycling but be prepared for some steep ups and downs.
